Certification is offered by AHIMA as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Certification is offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital Apprentice (CPC-H-A), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H) and is HIGHLY DESIRED.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM, 1 st shift

DUTIES:
Major Duties : The Medical Records Technician Coder is responsible for performing a quality review of patient care documents and assigning codes specific for the type of care provided. Duties include: Assigning codes to document patient care encounters for the specialty and subspecialty health care services; selecting and assigning codes from the current version of one or more coding systems depending on regular/recurring duties; adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or Evaluation and Management code; monitors ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services; performs a comprehensive review of the patient record to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data to ensure complete data capture; assists facility staff with provider education and documentation requirements to completely and accurately reflect the patient care provided; provides technical support in the areas of regulations and policy, coding requirements, resident supervision, reimbursement, workload, accepted nomenclature, and proper sequencing; and searches the patient record to find documentation justifying code assignment.

Qualifications : The following are the amounts of experience and/or education required to qualify for this position. Creditable Experience is defined as, experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as Â"core competenciesÂ") associated with current health information or medical record technology and/or cancer registry practice.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Experience - Two years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work or provides familiarity with the work of the Medical Record Technician position. Six months of the required 2 years of experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics needed to perform MRT work.

OR

Education - An associateÂ's degree with a major field of study in medical record technology/health information technology which was accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) at the time the program was completed. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED

OR

Combination - Experience and successfully completed education may be used to qualify for this position. Successful completion of an associateÂ's degree in a field of study other than medical records/health information will substitute for 18 months of the required experience. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-4: Basic requirements for experience and education above and evidence of demonstrating: basic knowledge of medical terminology; basic knowledge of disease processes and human anatomy; basic knowledge of medical record/health information guidelines, techniques, and procedures; and knowledge of the medical and legal significance of medical records.

GS-5 : One year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 level or successful completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in medical record technology/health information technology or a related degree with courses related to medical record technology sufficient to evidence the core competencies and evidence of demonstrating: the ability to apply knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy/pathophysiology, and disease processes sufficient to appropriately file, locate, and disclose health information; the ability to correctly apply a practical knowledge of laws and regulations related to the confidentiality of health information and release of information from medical records; knowledge of the internal organization of medical records and medical record references and procedures as appropriate to the position; and the ability to use health information software appropriate to the position, such as the electronic patient record, record tracking systems, chart deficiency systems, coding and abstracting systems, release of information systems, document scanning technology, electronic spreadsheets, transcription systems, encoder products, electronic encounter forms, database software, etc.

GS-6 : One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 and evidence of demonstrating: the ability to apply knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy/pathophysiology, and disease processes to fully understand the content of a patient record; ability to navigate efficiently through the paper and electronic medical record to find needed information; skill in interpreting and adapting health information guidelines that are not completely applicable to the work or have gaps in specificity and ability to use judgment in completing assignments with incomplete or inadequate guidelines; and ability to apply laws and regulations on the confidentiality of health information (e.g., Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); comprehensive knowledge of classification systems, such as current versions of International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Technology (CPT), the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding system (HCPCS), and skill in applying coding knowledge.

GS-7 : One year of experience equivalent to the GS-6 and evidence of demonstrating: the ability to apply knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy/pathophysiology, and disease processes to fully understand the content of a patient record; ability to navigate efficiently through the paper and electronic medical record to find needed information; skill in interpreting and adapting health information guidelines that are not completely applicable to the work or have gaps in specificity and ability to use judgment in completing assignments with incomplete or inadequate guidelines; and ability to apply laws and regulations on the confidentiality of health information (e.g., Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); comprehensive knowledge of classification systems, such as current versions of International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Technology (CPT), the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding system (HCPCS), and skill in applying coding knowledge.

GS-8 : One year of experience equivalent to the GS-7 level and evidence of demonstrating: ability to analyze the medical record to identify all pertinent diagnoses and procedures for coding, and to evaluate the adequacy of the documentation; the ability to read and understand the content of the medical record, the terminology, the significance of the comments, and the disease process/pathophysiology of the patient; skill in reviewing medical record documentation and assigning current versions of the classification systems required in the current position, such as ICD and CPT; and advanced knowledge of the full scope of coding and abstracting including inpatient discharges, surgical cases, diagnostic studies and procedures, outpatient encounters, and inpatient professional fees for a highly diversified range of specialties and subspecialties, such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiology, gastroenterology, plastic surgery, spinal cord injury, blind rehabilitation, anesthesia, acute and long term psychiatry including addiction treatment, hospice, ambulatory surgery, and other types of care.

Your resume, transcripts and supporting documents must support your answers in the occupational questionnaire. Your total background must demonstrate the core competencies of a Medical Records Technician Coder.

We accept unofficial transcripts, as long as they contain the applicant's name, the name of the school, the date and degree that was awarded, and the list of classes and credits earned. Transcripts must be received in this office by 11:59PM EST on the closing date in order to be considered. If you are selected an official transcript must be provided prior to entry on duty.

If Combination is used for qualification

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
