DUTIES:
The Tomah VA Medical Center has immediate openings for 2 Nurse Managers located in the Mental Health Long Term Care and Residential Treatment Units.

Work Schedule: Day Shift

403B Mental Health Long Term Care

Community Living Center Unit 403B is a 25-bed unit that providing long term care with specialized mental health requirements for a varied age range population. There is a Wander-guard system in place for identifies vulnerable individuals to minimize risk of getting lost when leaving the unit. The resident population includes patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses and co-morbidities such as dementia, schizophrenia, bipolar disease, traumatic brain injuries, polydipsia, etc. Residents range in age from adult to frail elderly (30-90+). Care includes assistance with ADLÂ's, medical support, ambulation, recreation therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc. For staff and patient safety, the ability to competently perform PMBA skills is required of all nursing staff on the unit. Therapeutic teaching, coaching, mentoring and programming is an important aspect of delivery of nursing care.

Residential Treatment

Acute Psychiatric care is provided primarily on an outpatient basis. Tele-psychiatry and the residential treatment program will also be supervised by the nurse manager. The patient population includes patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disease, traumatic brain injuries, PTSD, etc. Patients range in age from young adult to frail elderly (18-90+). Care includes stabilization of medications, starting psychotropic medication, detoxification, medical support, etc.

DUTIES

  • The Nurse Manager is directly responsible to the designated manager for administrative functions. The Nurse Executive has oversight for nursing practice issues.
  • The function of the Nurse Manager is to direct and supervise the delivery of quality nursing care to Veteran patients provided by staff under his/her direct supervision. The Nurse Manager is also responsible for overall management of his/her nursing unit, including but not limited to: staffing; space; quality improvement; resource management; coordination of care with other disciplines.
  • The Nurse Manger demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assure that care is provided as appropriate to the age related needs of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. This knowledge includes an understanding of the changes associated with aging and the relevance of this knowledge in developing and implementing a plan of care. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patientÂ's current health status, which will facilitate the delivery of care appropriate to the age specific needs of the adult and geriatric patient.
  • The nurse manager oversees the operations of all care, provided on a 24-hour basis by registered nurses, licensed practice nurses and nursing assistants. The nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation is applied on an ongoing, systematic manner to all patients.
  • The unit and nursing staff also support others areas as needed and accompany patients upon transfer to other facilities if necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree (BSN)
  • Master of Science Nursing Degree (MSN)
  • Previous nursing experience working in both Mental Health and Management
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
