DUTIES:
PRIMARY DUTIES:
Performs evaluations for the full range of mental health clients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and admitted to the Mental Health (MH) Acute and Acute Transition Units.

Addresses the mental health concerns of Veterans in collaboration with ED staff, including the ED social worker and on-call psychiatrist.

Completes mental health reminder screenings with an emphasis on assessment of suicidal and homicidal concerns.

Manages situations involving emergency detentions and police holds for intoxicated patients.

Admits patients to the MH Acute Unit, and collaborates with the ED social worker and on-call psychiatrist as necessary for disposition/support/transportation of patients not appropriate for hospital admission.

Collaborates with and provides assistance to ED physicians for patients with medical issues which would preclude admission to the MH Acute Unit.

Provides support to the MH Acute Unit and assists in triaging patients between the MH Acute and Acute Transition Units.

Addresses restraint and seclusion face-to-face needs.

Completes telephone call-backs to Veterans recently discharged from the MH Acute and Acute Transition Units.

Consults with the charge nurse and on-call psychiatrist to address behavioral and medical issues on the MH Acute and Acute Transition Units as well as other units throughout the facility as needed.

Provides mental health consultation throughout the medical center on a variety of patient care issues, including behavioral management, as requested.

Responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the medical center or healthcare system, as appropriate.

Other Duties May Include:
Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services, including assessment, and uses the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care.

Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including: individual psychotherapy, group interventions, and psychoeducational approaches

May conduct Compensation and Pension evaluations

May be involved in the Psychology Training Program and Training Committee.

May provide clinical supervision to psychology trainees, including practicum students, predoctoral interns, and postdoctoral fellows.

Is involved in the training of medical students, medical and psychiatric residents, fellows and other graduate or post-graduate trainees, as appropriate.

Oversees the establishment of program monitoring and outcome measurements in conjunction with the program manager.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Qualifications:
1. Doctoral degree in psychology from APA Accredited Graduate Program in an area of training consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed

2. Internship in professional psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association

3. Professional Psychology Licensure: States, License Numbers, dates of original licensure.

A psychologist must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the US, or the District of Columbia. The secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for a period not to exceed two years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed.

4. For GS 11, no experience is needed beyond the basic requirements. For GS 12, at least one year of professional experience is required that is equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, a wide range of professional psychological theories and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations. 2. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies. 3. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures. For GS 13, there must be two or more years of clinical experience comparable to what one would get in a VA setting, either by post-doctoral employment or two years of employment as a psychologist. A psychologist must be licensed at the GS 13 level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skilles and Abilities: 1 . Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations. 2 . Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health. 3 . Knowledge of clinical research literature.

If Combination is used for qualification

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave : Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
