Under the general direction of the Director of the Bureau of Health Services, the Medical Director, directs the medical, mental health, dental, pharmaceutical an! d optometric programs for offenders in the Department of Corrections. This position supervises the permanent, LTE, and contractural positions, dental director, pharmacist supervisor, mental health director, optometrist, ophthalmic assistant, physicians, and psychiatrists practicing in the insitutions and center settings within the Department. This position directs the scope of health services provided to offenders through: determination of drugs to be listed in the formulary for practititoners to prescribe, determination via prior authorization of all non-emergency diagnostics, consultations, and surgical procedures done on the over 16,000 offenders covered by the health services units. Monitors the physicians, psychiatrists and practitioners; develops policies/procedures and protocols.
Special Notes :
Must maintain a current license to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin.
Must maintain a current DEA number.
Meets continuing med! ical education requirements for each biennium as established b! y the Department of Regulation and Licensing, Medical Examining Board.
Board certification in family practice or internal medicine.
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S. , a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Experience in program planning, goal setting, establishing work plans.
Knowledge and experience in a medical specialty relevant to planning and implementing effective correctional health medical services.
Strategic management, quality control and supervisory techniques.
Demonstrated skills in effective communications with the public, professional organi! zations, government agencies and legal representatives.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel, functioning in a team relationship to address correctional health issues.
Demonstrated skills in quality improvement, peer review and supervisory techniques.
Methods and techniques to evaluate staff performance and development.
Extensive knowledge and skills in managed health care delivery systems.
Extensive knowledge of fiscal management in large, complex organizations.
The starting salary is between $229,596 and $260,974 annually. This wage includes supplemental pay for Board Certification and Management Responsibility. This position is in pay schedule/range 50/51.
A twelve-month probationary period will be required.
