The Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance is the professional organisation and trade union for the media, entertainment and arts industries. It represents actors, journalists and entertainment industry employees and has over 15,000 members.

Our Members

Our members include people working in television, radio, theatre and film, entertainment venues and recreation grounds, as journalists, actors, dancers, cartoonists and photographers, orchestral and opera performers, as well as people working in public relations, advertising, book publishing and website production.

Our Locations and Staffing

The MEAA national office is in Redfern in Sydney.

There are branch offices located in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

National Industrial Officer

The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) is the industrial and professional organisation representing the people who work in Australia’s media and entertainment industries. Its membership includes journalists, artists, photographers, performers, dancers, symphony orchestra musicians, freelance musicians, and film, television and performing arts technicians.

MEAA has a vacancy for a National Industrial Officer based in either Sydney or Melbourne.

The National Industrial Officer will negotiate with employers in the media industry, represent members in workplaces and tribunals, and provide advice to members and internally to MEAA staff in collective and complex matters.

Qualifications: Industrial relations qualifications or equivalent experience are necessary.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential requirements:

  • A commitment to trade union principles of social justice, equality, solidarity, and collective action;
  • A commitment to the rights of creative workers and a belief in a thriving and diverse media sector;
  • Experience as an industrial or legal officer in a union or in a similar environment;
  • A thorough understanding of relevant state and federal industrial legislation;
  • Negotiation skills and the ability to navigate competing interests to reach agreement;
  • Experience negotiating collective agreements; and
  • Ability to write fluently in a range of styles and formats.

Desirable

  • Experience appearing in the Federal Circuit Court or Federal Court, and similar courts and tribunals will be highly regarded;
  • Legal and/or industrial relations qualifications;
  • Knowledge of contemporary industrial relations issues in the media sector; and
  • Knowledge of media and copyright law.

The position is available on a permanent basis with a package dependent on skills and experience. Benefits include monthly accrued rostered days off, 5 weeks annual leave each year plus an additional 3 days leave between Christmas and New Year.
