The Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI, is recruiting for 1 full-time counseling or clinical psychologist to provide services to Veterans working as a float between 2nd and 3rd shifts in the Emergency Department (ED). The position involves the provision of efficient and effective consultation to ED staff, strong skills in crisis management, and ability to assess risk for harm to self and others. In addition, the incumbent will provide consultation to medical floors, which may include decision-making capacity assessment and health and behavior interventions, including but not limited to brief therapy for pain management, coping with termina! l diagnoses, reducing risk for non-compliance with medications and recommended treatments, and adaptation to the hospital environment. Completion of at least 1 Compensation & Pension Exam per month is expected.

The psychologist will cover a minimum of 2 weekends per month, which may include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday consecutively, with 12-hour tours (e.g., 12noon-12midnight for 2nd shift or 12 midnight - 12 noon for 3rd shifts) on Saturday and Sunday. Weekday 2nd shifts will be either 8- or 10-hour tours (e.g., 3pm-1am or 2:30pm-11pm), while weekday 3rd shifts will be either 9 pm to 7 am or 11 pm to 7 am. At least every other Saturday from midnight to noon on 3rd shifts is required: Apart from this regularly scheduled 3rd shift, this individual will work 2nd shift until required to "float" to 3rd shift for leave time with one month's notice.

DUTIES:

At the full performance level (GS-13) psychologists are licensed at the doctoral level to independently provide psychological services.

DUTIES:

  • Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services, including assessment of the patient's emotional, functional or psychological condition.
  • Performs evaluations for the full range of mental health clients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and admitted to the Mental Health (MH) Acute and Acute Transition Units.
  • Screen, assess, diagnose, and treat depressive disorders, anxiety-related disorders, and serious mental illness.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions including: individual psychotherapy, group interventions, and psychoeducational approaches.
  • Addresses mental health patients' concerns in collaboration with ED staff, including ! the ED social worker and on-call psychiatrist.
  • Manages situati! ons involving emergency detentions and police holds for intoxicated patients.
  • Provides support off-tour for the MH Acute Unit, and assists in triaging patients between the MH Acute and Acute Transition Units.
  • Addresses restraint and seclusion face-to-face needs.
  • Completes telephone call-backs to veterans recently discharged from the MH Acute and Acute Transition Units.
  • Provides mental health consultation on the off-tours throughout the medical center.
  • Conducts Compensation and Pension evaluations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The incumbent observes normal safety precautions while working in an office/clinic type environment, which is well lighted, clean and does not present hazards to personal safety. There may be occasional risk of physical harm, which requires special precautions and training which will include PMDB (Prevention and Management of Disturbed Behavior). The incumbent may be exposed to infectious diseases! and medical/psychiatric emergencies, While not anticipated, the incumbent could be required to assume an irregular tour of duty, which could include on-call coverage, evening, or weekend hours, in response to clinical needs.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must possess a Doctoral Degree in Psychology from a graduate program in Psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) in the specialty area of the degree must coincide with the position.
  • Must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.
  • Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
GS-11 LEVEL:
To qualify at the GS-11 grade level,

you must meet the basic requirements.

Staff psychologists at this l! evel diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological and/or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. They practice under the close supervision of a licensed psychologist.

GS-12 LEVEL:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, in addition to meeting all the basic requirements listed above you must have at least 1 full year of post doctoral degree experience as a professional psychologist and must demonstrate the following rating factors:

  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply a wide range of professional psychological theories and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations
  • Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies
  • Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures
GS-13 LEVEL:
To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must have ! the experience requirements equivalent to the GS-12 level and at least ! 1 additional year of experience as a professional psychologist. You must demonstrate the GS-13 rating factors listed below:

  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations
  • Knowledge of clinical research literature
  • Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health
