In addition to our main facility in Tomah, we offer services in four community-based outpatient clinics. These clinics are located in LaCrosse, Clark County, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids. VAMC Tomah is one of seven facilities that comprise Veterans Integrated Services Network 12 (VISN12) which is administratively headquartered at Hines, IL, and includes facilities in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

There are currently three openings for RNs for 403A Acute Psychiatry at the Tomah VA Medical Center. Two full-time and one part-time (.5 FTE). All are for the night shift.

Work Schedule: Night Shift

UNIT: 403A Acute Psychiatry

DUTIES:

• The RN is directly responsible to the designated manager.
• The function of the Registered Nurse is to provide, direct, and supervise the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran population.
• The RN possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting. This broad based clinical knowledge enables the RN to effecti! vely implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage ac! ute and chronic illness states, assist veterans in the attainment of optimal levels of functioning through rehabilitation, and provide supportive measures for the dying patient and their significant others.
• The registered nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age related needs of the patient served in his/her assigned service area. This knowledge includes an understanding of the changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population. He/ she must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patientÂ's current health status, which will facilitate the delivery of care appropriate to the age specific needs of the adult and geriatric patient.

403A/N is a 24 bed dual purpose unit; 403A Acute Psychiatry (11 beds), is designed to provide a psychiatrically safe environment and 403N Community Living Center (CLC) (13 beds) is a less restricted ! environment which fosters residents' transition to independent living. The patient population includes patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses such as PTSD, suicidal behavior, schizophrenia, bipolar disease. traumatic brain injuries, etc. Patients range in age from young adult to frail elderly (18­90+). Care includes stabilization of medications, starting psychotropic medication, detoxification, assistance with ADUs, medical support, ambulation, etc. The ALOS for 403 acute is 4 days and 403CLC is 30 days. For staff and patient safety, the ability to competently perform PMDB skills is required of all nursing staff on the Unit.

Therapeutic teaching, coaching, mentoring and programming is an important aspect of delivery of Nursing Care.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

U.S. Citizen.
• Graduated from school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by an approved accrediting body (NLNAC, CCNE) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Foreign graduates must have a CGFNS Certificate in order to receive credit as a BSN.
• Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a registered nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. (You must include your registration number and expiration date with your submitted application documents).
• Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C.402(d) and 7407(d).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree (BSN)
• Previous psychiatric nursing experience.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in! determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

• Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
• Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience;! or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
• Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
• Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience
