Job Description: Under direct or general supervision, facilitate communications for police, fire and EMS personnel 24/7 during emergency and non-emergency operations, access information and route as needed, make inquiry with local, State and Federal data resources, compile and record a variety of data and other duties as assigned.
Frequent call-ins and shift extensions are possible. Candidates need to work well under stress, have good judgment and the ability to deal courteously with the public. Job Responsibilities: 25.00% - Communicate with officers and other personnel in many agencies via operation of communications console 25.00% - Communicate with the public in both emergency and non-emergency capacity; receive and assess information and route as needed 25.00% - Hear, comprehend, document, enter and route information 10.00% - Make inquiry with local, state and federal data banks 10.00% - Read, comprehend and decipher Teletype messages 5.00% - Provide support services for all divisions within the Sheriff's Department as per department policy and procedures Job Requirements: DISPATCHER - ~ Accurate typing, minimum of 40 words per minute with minimal error ratio, and data entry skills
~ Ability to follow directions
~ Strong multi-tasking skills
~ Ability to perform in a stressful environment
Must pass CRITICAL computer testing
Physical Requirements: Candidates may be required to pass a physical examination conducted by a Wisconsin licensed physician selected by the County. The physician shall provide a written report of the examination on the forms provided by the Sheriff"s Office. Candidates may be required to pass a psychological examination conducted by a Wisconsin licensed psychologist/psychiatrist selected by the county and will provide a written report of such an examination to the Sheriff Candidates shall submit to and pass a pre-employment drug screening test conducted by a laboratory selected by the county which will provide a written report to the Sheriff. Working Environment: Qualifications: Prior to applying for a position as a dispatcher, individuals must meet the following minimum standards:
~ Be a United States citizen as evidenced by: Birth certificate or Naturalization certificate
~ Possess a valid Wisconsin driver"s license.
~ Applicant must successfully complete a skills assessment test.
~ The applicant shall not have been convicted of any federal felony or of any offense committed in Wisconsin, which could be punished as a felony.
~ The applicant shall be of "good character" as determined by an extensive background investigation that will provide a basis for judgment on the applicant"s loyalty to the United States, general reputation, caliber of the associates and personal habits and interests.
Background Investigation: A background investigation will be conducted on those candidates standing highest on the eligibility list. The investigation will be conducted by a Sheriff"s Department investigator and will include but is not limited to:
~ A search of local, state and national fingerprint records from fingerprints provided by the candidate.
~ Law enforcement and credit checks/history from all areas of residence.
~ Work history to include interviews with the candidate"s supervisors of current and past employers. The candidate must specifically authorize and interview with their current employer.
~ Education history to include a review of all transcripts and diplomas and interviews with registrars of all schools the candidate has attended.
~ Interviews of references and neighbors to include the candidates current and past neighborhoods.
Education Requirements:

~ TIME system certification (can be obtained on the
job)
Experience Requirements:
Experience in the
field of dispatching is not required, but is beneficial, especially if in the
area of law enforcement or practical experience within emergency medical
services and/or firefighting.
Working Environment:
The working environment of
the dispatcher is indoors and nearly all tasks are done in a seated
position. The dispatcher uses a wide
variety of equipment, including office machines, telephones and radio
dispatching equipment. The position
requires the wearing of a uniform.
