The position will be associated with Dr. Barker’s lab in the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute at NAU’s main campus. The Barker lab primarily studies the NIH priority pathogens Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii which are risk group 3 pathogens. These studies involve multidisciplinary approaches including molecular genetics, genomics, gene expression analysis, bioinformatics and functional genomic analyses, and immunology and pathogenesis in murine models of disease. Additionally, this person will assist with SARS-CoV2 research in BSL3/ABSL3. Candidates with strong background in any of these fields are encouraged to apply. Under general supervision, applies knowledge, skills and abilities obtained in PhD to plan, design and complete analysis of vaccine trials and other animal experiments in Barker Lab as needed for the U19 and other funded projects.
Communicate Results - 30%
- Prepares manuscripts for publication; presents research results to scientific conferences and other groups.

- Designs, performs, and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance.
- Complete IACUC/IBC paperwork, order mice, and plan ABSL3 usage.
- Complete statistical analysis of data collected in experiments and generate tables and figures for publication.

- PhD in Biology.
- 6 years of research experience.

- Experience with ABSL2, ABSL3, BSL2 and BSL3 microbiology.
- Understanding of IACUC and appropriate training and certification in biosafety and vertebrate animal work.
- Record of publication and scientific communication.
- Experience with cultivating Coccidioides and preparing inoculum for murine infection.
- Experience with intranasal infection of mice, IP, SubQ, SM and CP blood collection.
- Nucleic acid purification.
- Conventional and real-time PCR.
- Ability to run statistical software, specifically R.
- Ability to supervise and manage student and technical staff.

Anticipated salary range is $62,996 to $78,745. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
