The Department of Behavioral Health provides a professional hands-on experience in a hospital/clinic based outpatient men! tal health and addiction services setting. The intern will have opportunities to work with psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists with a wide variety of experience, training, and specialties.
An internship in Behavioral Health offers a realistic experience for those hoping to provide psychotherapy and addiction treatment in an outpatient setting. Interns will spend a portion of their time observing their assigned on-site supervisor as well as other professionals in the department to more independent experiences under their on-site supervisor. The intern will gain experience towards: assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and psychotherapy. The intern will work under the close supervision of a fully licensed and credentialed mental health professional.
Education/Learning Experience
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field. Enrolled in and completed all core classroom coursework in Master's Program in Soc! ial Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling, or other cl! inical mental health program. Intern must be enrolled in internship (or equivalent) class in the program.
- Desired: Previous experience in mental health and addiction field as an employee or volunteer.
- Required: Interviewing and relationship building skills, DSM diagnosis, individualized goal orientated treatment planning, basic knowledge of CBT and other theories of counseling. Also, have an understanding of professional code of ethics.
- Desired: Knowledge of motivational interviewing, stages of change.
